Why get involved?Giving…It is estimated that a pair of volunteers can reach as many as 3,000 people with life-saving information. You can support SPW in continuing its behaviour change programmes, equipping volunteers to deliver important health and environmental information in a way that actively engages other young people. Awareness and Action…In sub-Saharan Africa’s worst-affected countries, the epidemic’s demographic impact on population structure means that if current infection rates continue and there is no large-scale treatment programme, up to 60% of today’s 15-year-olds will not reach their 60th birthday. (From UNAIDS 2004 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, p42.) There is much work to do in the fight against AIDS, yet having worked at the sharp end of the epidemic, SPW volunteers are excellently placed to represent the needs of rural communities and young people, and are proving effective campaigners at local, national and international level.
